Priya Sarukkai Chabria

Priya Sarukkai Chabria’s publications include the poetry collections Not Springtime Yet ( 2008, HarperCollins) and Dialogue and Other Poems(Sahitya Akademi 2005, reprint 2006) , the novels Generation 14 (2008, Penguin-Zubaan) and The Other Garden (1995, Rupa&Co.), and, as editor, two anthologies All Poetry is Protest (2003) and 50 Poets 50Poems (2006, Open Space).

Her work is published in various journals and websites in Europe, the US and India. She has been elected member on prize awarding  panels, has participated inThe Creative Writer conference at the Writers’ Center, Norwich and has curated two seminars for the Indian Academy of Literature in 2007 and 2009. She edits the website Talking Poetry (South Asia), and teaches creative writing.

Sarukkai-Chabria has learnt Pail to read the Buddhist Jataka Tales.  She has collaborated with classical Bharata Natyam dancer Malavika Sarukkai and Saroja Kamakshi in the productions Fireflies (1994), Srinkala (2000) and Vipinam – The Grove (2006) that were presented in India and abroad.  She has also worked with moving images, miniature paintings and digital photomontage.  She co-founded the film club, Friends of the Archive that specialized in screening silent movies and has co-scripted the short film, Dhaaradirected by Suresh Chabria that opened The Critics Section, Oberhausen Film Festival, Germany in 1989.

She is Recipient, Senior Fellowship to Outstanding Artists for Literature from the Government of India for exploring the validity of the classical rasa theory of aesthetics in contemporary writing in English. One of her first stories, The Cloud Quilt received Special Mentionin The Asian Age Short Story Competitionin1995.

She walks porcupines and listens to the sound of the sea in a conch.

Aside from this, she is translating the songs of 8th century Tamil mystic poet Aandaal as The Autobiography of A Goddess and a book of essays Eels of Time; both books will be published in 2011.
